Pot Odds

pot-odds-explained

Pot odds are an important factor in poker

The term given to a relationship between pot size and bet size is pot odds. For instance, if there is a $10 inside the pot and you must call a bet like $2, then you are gaining pot odds of 5-1. If you must call a bet such as $5 in the same $10 pot; you are gaining pot odds of 2-1.

To right away show your pot odds when you play online poker, we recommend the use of a pot odds calculator.

The pot size

You should have an idea of the size of your pot. If you are involved in a Limit poker, instead of counting the amount of cash, you need to count the number of bets. In case the bets come in doubles in Hold'em, you should equate the big bets as 2 small bets. In Pot-Limit or No Limit, it is harder to count the pot and due to this, the pots will not be correct.

How to make use of the pot odds

Once you are familiar with your pot odds, you must use such information correctly. This is done by joining the pot odds to your hand value. By doing this, you are better placed to put your challenger on likely hands and also get to know your chances of creating a better hand than your challenger's.

Example, you have got a flush draw on the flop in the Hold'em and you are against a challenger who in your opinion has got a top pair. There are only nine cards. These cards will award you a flush if you have already flopped a four flush.

The nine outs offer you a 35%chance of creating the flush on the turn and river too as shown in the table below. This states that you must pot odds of 2-1 so as to call a bet on the flop. The implied odds

The implied odds are referred to as the relationship between the size of the existing pot and the pot you are about to win. This states that the pot does not put the right odds even if you make a decision on playing since you think you can get action and win more when you hit.

A good example of that is in a Limit Hold'em where your opponent bets $20 into an $80 pot and your call earns you pot odds of 5-1 because you are risking $20 to win $100. However, if you think your opponent will call a raise or a bet on the river if you make your hand, your indirect odds are 6-1 or 7-1.

The rule thumb for Omaha and Hold'em

Every single person gives you the estimated 4% chance of hitting on the river or turn. Example five outs earns you around 20% chance of getting better, six outs earns you 24% and so on.
